music as medicine: personalized dementia care in ruskin

Have you ever heard a song that instantly transports you back in time? The right music can bring old memories to life: driving in your first car, hanging out with friends, dancing with your sweetheart. Music enhances one's quality of life at any age, and the effects are amplified for those with dementia.
That's why we've partnered with the non-profit organization Music & Memory to bring personalized iPod playlists to our residents. Specialized staff members are trained to create customized playlists for our seniors with their favorite songs, from golden oldies to big band hits and show tunes.

can music help with dementia?

Music boosts brain activity and evokes emotions that bring back memories. Listening to music can also help reduce agitation, coordinate motor movements, and stimulate positive interactions. Even in later stages of dementia, a person may still be able to tap their toes to the beat or sing along to a song from their childhood.
Music touches human beings on a deeper level that goes beyond the cognitive brain. It can be a powerful medicine that provides a way for patients to connect and makes the day a little brighter.
